For those committed to self-management, reviewing the past instills an actionable realization: time to create your own miracle.

Incarceration (twice!) → books magnet → doctor → clinical director → professor. Think your past defines the contours of your future? For those committed to self-management, it instead instills an actionable realization: time to create your own miracle.

Creating miracles — heavy stuff indeed. Now, take a minute or two to focus: how ya gonna conjure a miracle if you lack a crucial component of self-management → self-confidence? How you gonna enjoy faith in yourself, your abilities, without self-discipline, another vital aspect of a polished me/thee?

You can begin exercising the self-discipline muscle today, as in, right now. Example: toss that quiet yet deadly holier-than-thou ‘tude which has you thinking: I can’t possibly learn from an ex-convict.

For what it’s worth, I didn’t even realize I possessed that hoity-toity perspective until my college days. I studied peneology and corrections via a series of self-created formalized (i.e. college approved) independent study courses. That led to an internship with a nonprofit focused on such issues which, in turn, plopped me into my first few post-grad jobs.

My work involved counseling inmates, first inside Stillwater Prison in Minnesota; later, at Philly’s Graterford Prison. Folks, lemme tell yathe sound of prison doors clanging behind you saturates your veins with ice. Despite knowing–each time–I’d leave the prison within a couple of hours, that sound etched a mark deep within my core, for life.

I learned countless Life Lessons through those experiences. Chief among them: Seat-of-the-Pants University (SPU) offers an education unmatched by the “Hahvahd”s of this world. (For those who missed their coffee break → “Harvard.”) Combine that SPU education with the ivy-halls deal, and LawdHaMercy! Intellectual + spiritual + emotional intelligence — beyond measure. Witness: this TED speaker.

Dr. B.J. Davis teaches how-to dwarf self-doubt using practical real-life examples, as opposed to gibbering mere pompous esoteric sounds-good silliness. In essence, he proves —in absolute fashion—one’s past does NOT define a (wise) person; rather, it refines.
